A splash of colour for heaven

Cy Twombly died this week and so in his memory I’m posting some of my favourite images. For those that don’t know of him he was a contemporary and friend of Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenburg , also one of my absolute favourites, though sadly less well known. He beat out his own path, and created work obsessed with scribbles, and referencing mythology and classical verse.

Described as “Cy Twombly, whose spare childlike scribbles and poetic engagement with antiquity left him stubbornly out of step with the movements of postwar American art even as he became one of the era’s most important painters”*, he’s a inspiration for stubbornly following your own path against fashion’s dictates.

Plus he inspired Cecily Brown, another one of my favourite painters…
